Sleep Deprivation – the Return from China

By Kari Ann

Despite the tranquil setting at the Park Hyatt, I could not fall asleep.  At 3am, I could not fall asleep and at 5am, I still couldn’t.  So when we got on the plane to head back to Oregon, I was almost positive I wouldn’t be able to follow through with our plan to stay awake the entire flight home.  (The idea was that our flight into Portland got in at 8pm, so if we could stay awake until we get home, we might be back on schedule).  Surprisingly, we both stayed awake for the whole trip – we watched movies and made plans for our move to a new apartment (more to come on that later!).

I was even more surprised when the comfort of my own bed did not entice me to sleep.  While our original plan was in shambles for me, it worked seamlessly for Bryan.  He was asleep by 9:30pm our first night home and up for work bright and early the next day.  The next three nights, I still couldn’t sleep.  My body started to rebel against me and I got sick which only complicated matters.  In the midst of being sleep deprived and now sick, we spent our first week back calling and viewing open apartments.  It took about two weeks (and some Niquil), but eventually, with much patience from Bryan, I got back into the swing of things.
